History of Andhra Pradesh

In the Medieval India this region was ruled by the powerful empires of “Vijayanagar Empire”.

After India’s independence in 1947, Nizam of Hederabad was forced  to merge with the Indian Union.

The state of Hyderabad was hence captured as per diplomacy of Ballabh Bhao Patel on 17 September 1948 by military operation named “Operation Polo”.

Andhra Pradesh is the first Indian state of free India which was formed on a purely linguistic basis in 1953.

Geography of Andhra Pradesh

  • Andhra Pradesh has the second longest coastline after Gujarat.
  • The highest peak is Arma Konda which rises 1680 m above sea level. This is not only the highest peak of Andhra Pradesh but also of Eastern ghats.
  • Krishna and Godavari are the major rivers of Andhra Pradesh.
  • This state is eight largest by Area and tenth largest state in respect of population.
  • Anantapur is the largest district of Andhra Pradesh by area. East Godavari district is largest by population.

Boundaries

The state is bordered by Telangana in the north-west, Chhattisgarh and Odisha in the north-east, Karnataka in the west, Tamil Nadu in the south.

Major Dams in Andhra Pradesh

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam: Nagarjuna Sagar Dam built across the Krishna river forming a boundary between Telangana and Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh state.

Srisailam Dam: Srisailam Dam constructed on the Krishna river at the border of Telangana and Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.

Prakasam Barrage: Prakasham Barrage across the Krishna river is located at the outskirts of Vijayawada in Krishna district and the barrage also serves as a road bridge over a lake.

Dowleswaram Barrage: Dowleswaram Barrage across the Godavari river in Dowleswaram was built on the last stretch of the Godavari before it empties into the Bay of Bengal.

Polavaram Dam: Polavaram Dam across the Godavari river is a multi-purpose irrigation project under construction in Andhra Pradesh.

Jalaput Dam: Jalaput Dam is built across the Machkund river near the border of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh in Visakhapatnam district.

Tatipudi Dam: Tatipudi Dam and Reservoir is located in Tatipudi of Vizianagaram and major source of drinking water supply to the city of Visakhapatnam.

General Facts of Andhra Pradesh

  • The vegetation found in the state is large of dry deciduous types with a mixture of teak, Terminalia, Dalbergia, Pterocarpus, Anogeissus, etc.
  • The estuaries of river Godavari and Krishna support rich mangrove forests with fishing cats and otters as keystone species.
  • The Minister of Tourism and Culture has issued a declaration of the Telugu language as a Classical Language.
  • The famous Ongole Bull looks similar to Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva.
  • It’s said all the stone sculptures of Nandi in all temples are modelled after the Ongole Bull.
  • Satish Dhawan Space Centre, located on the banks of Sriharikota in the Nellore District is one of the main attractions of the state.
  • Telugu, the official language of Andhra Pradesh, was described by Englishmen as the”Italian of the East ” for its sweetness.
  • Andhra Pradesh is also called as Ratna Garbha of India. Its resources are estimated to be 110 M tonnes of industrial grade minerals and 200 M tonnes of building materials.
  • The famous diamonds Kohinoor and Pitt came from the mines of Golconda.
  • Tummalpalle mines are a rich source of Uranium. In India Andhra Pradesh is the highest producer of Uranium.
  • Mallikarjuna Swamy temple of Srisailam (Kurnool district) is one of the twelve Jyotirlings of Shiva.
  • Mogalarajapuram caves of Vijayawada containing idols of shiva and vinayaka are good historic tourist spots.
  • The magnificent Falaknuma palace of Hyderabad was built by Nawab Viqar-ul-Umra in 1893. It was later turned into a luxury hotel.
